One approach starts at the synapse and works outward. The other starts with a hundred
people playing music in formation and works inward. I am interested in where they meet.
SHANK3 and the genetics of autism

SHANK3 codes for a scaffolding protein at the synapse, the structure that holds receptors in
place where one neuron meets the next. When a copy of the gene is missing or damaged, those
synapses form badly. It is one of the most consistently identified genetic links to autism
spectrum disorder.
At the Rosetta Institute I spent two weeks on the molecular biology behind that link, forty
hours a week, which is the most time I have ever spent on one question. I ran PCR to amplify
target sequences and used flow cytometry to sort and count cell populations.
Honestly, the lab technique mattered less to me than the scale of what it was pointing at.
One gene out of roughly twenty thousand, and it shapes how a person hears sound and uses
language. I keep circling the same question from the other direction in music.
What musical training does to attention and memory

I took Cognitive Neuroscience through UC Berkeley’s Academic Talent Development Program and
finished with a 91%. The lectures covered how attention gets allocated and how working
memory is bounded, along with the ways both are measured. The project at the end was mine to
choose.
I looked at what happens to cognition in people who train musically over a period of years.
The finding that stuck with me is that the effects are not confined to music. Musicians show
measurable differences in working memory capacity, in sustained and divided attention, and
in some kinds of problem-solving. None of those abilities has anything obvious to do with
playing an instrument.
By then I had been in marching band for two years, memorizing drill charts and music at the
same time while moving. Reading that literature gave me a vocabulary for something I had
been doing without understanding it.
Music therapy and autism

Abstract. Music therapy is widely used with autistic children, and the claims made for it
range from carefully evidenced to considerably overstated. This paper reviews what the
research actually supports. The strongest findings cluster around social communication: joint
attention, turn-taking, and shared engagement, where the structure of musical interaction
supplies a scaffold for exchanges that are difficult to elicit through language alone. Call
and response, a shared pulse, and predictable phrase lengths all do part of that work.
Evidence for broader claims is substantially weaker. Gains in language acquisition and
reductions in core autistic traits are reported, but the studies behind them have small
samples, inconsistent protocols, and outcome measures that vary from one paper to the next.
This paper argues that music therapy is best understood not as a treatment for autism but as
a medium for interaction, and that the mechanism deserves the same neurological scrutiny
given to musical training in typically developing populations.
